The Story of the Renault Card Key

The hands-free card is one of the most significant inventions ever to change the way people travel in cars. Pascaline Head Cross-Cutting Products for Renault Group Products talks us through the history and development of this small device.

The origins of the card

The hands-free card from Renault is an international hit. It's now an essential element in the lives of car owners. It was designed over 20 years ago and is now one of the leading innovations in the company. Pascaline is the head of Cross-Cutting Products at the Products division, takes us on an exploration to discover the story behind this useful accessory.

It was in 2001 when the Laguna II, a saloon designed to embody 'lifestyle' driving, entered production. It was a time of great innovation with a variety of new equipment features which helped customers enjoy their vehicle to the fullest.

The occupants still had to use keys to open and close their doors. Renault engineers realized that this was a significant issue for many people.

They decided to include the contactless card into their vehicles, and then develop an application that would allow drivers to unlock and begin their vehicles by shaking their hands. The card key is now found in two out of three Renault vehicles. It's either located in the ignition barrel or in the centre console, the car will unlock when the card approaches and lock automatically when it is moved away. This is a genuine Renault remote control card (without blade). It is supplied individually clam packed and ready to programme using Abrites diagnostics for Renault/ Dacia software with the ProTAG programmer.

The design

A Renault key card, or even a remote car key, is a wonderful convenience to have in our everyday lives. However, these devices can fail due to wear and tear or dropping. It can be frustrating when this happens. There are several ways you can repair your Renault keycard. Contacting your dealership is one alternative. This may take a while and may be costly. A professional locksmith is another option.

It comes in two different colors and can be personalized with your logo or VIN. It can be put in a key case or used with an ordinary keychain. This is an authentic Renault component and can only be used on the vehicle for the reason for which it was purchased. Please supply your VIN when you order to ensure that the correct key is delivered.

The technology

Renault key cards have transponder chips and the ability to communicate at low frequency that allows the card to communicate with your vehicle. The chips are susceptible to cracking due to use and can be extremely costly to have them repaired or replaced at a dealership. We can repair or replacement your Renault key cards at only a fraction of the cost of the dealer.

The hands-free card first came out in 2001, in the Laguna II saloon. This car was conceived as the ideal lifestyle car of the 21st century. However, despite a detailed design brief based upon more than 6,000 customer interviews looking at their lifestyles, habits and expectations, Renault ran out of time to develop prototypes and test all possible uses.

Luckily, the product lead on Laguna II, Bernard Dumondel was in an hotel at the time, and used his room key to open his car. Since the key was the small magnetic strip the product lead thought it might be possible to create a car key that worked in a similar way.

In  renault car key replacement  that followed the card was hailed as an innovative innovation and is now available on two out of every three Renault vehicles. Renault has opted to use the new features of smartphones to enhance the hands-free cards, even though it appears that they are about to replace it.

The keyless entry system

The hands-free cards of Renault were an innovative piece of technology when it was first introduced 20 years ago. The exterior is the same but the technology has been upgraded to make it more user-friendly and more difficult to hack.

In the first place, it cannot be used to open the doors or start the engine from outside the vehicle unless it is activated by the driver. This is because radio antennae "around the car" are set up to determine whether the key is inside or outside. The key will continue to turn the ignition from a distance however, it won't unlock the doors. This is for your security.

Second, the wireless remote control transmissions of the system use the rolling-code. This decreases the chance of someone intercepting an informational message and retransmitting it to gain access, but it does not eliminate it. [1]

If your Megane's key fob suddenly stops working, especially after you have dropped it on the floor, it could be a sign that the receiver module has developed an issue. If this is the case, you'll need to replace it with a genuine Renault replacement. For more information you can click on the 'Key Programming Information tab above.
